Millions of years ago, this body of land was covered by water from the Gulf of California and local mountains were uplifted. If you study the sediment layers, you will find remains of animals that once inhabited this area. These animals include camels, horses, cheetahs, bears, and groud sloths. Which of some are now extinct. Now all that remains is dry mud. It gets the contour lines due to rain, wind, and periods of flooding.
